Haters, Gossipers and Slanderers
Chill chill, before you think that this is a post full of hatred and anger, it is not.
I just happened to stumble upon a video today of this girl who was talking about the above topic and how to handle it and I thought it was quite good advise and decided to sorta share it.
Girls, I'm sure, at one point of your life, at least once, you would have experienced bullies, people talking bad about you, heard gossips about you and so on so forth right? If yes, *high five*, if no, what a lucky gal you are.
Let's be real, no matter how good you are, people are just gonna talk, whether the things they talk about are true or false, you can't stop them from talking! That's why it's called slandering and gossiping.
Even 'good' people like Princess Kate gets haters where people talk about how she modeled in college in a transparent dress and that she's a slut and yada yada yada, innocent babies gets called 'ugly' and 'irritating' and so much more.
Remember the movie 'A Walk To Remember'? What did Jamie do? She was just an innocent girl minding her own business and she was called names and bullied.
So how to handle gossips?
1) Do a self-check.
- Check yourself to see if what they are saying is true. For example, if people are calling you a slut, maybe you are? If you are and you hate being called a slut, change lor. I'm not gonna teach you how to determine if you're a slut cos I'm not gonna get myself into trouble.
And if you think you're not a slut, then it leads me to my second point.
2) Confront the 'gossiper/slanderer'
- By confronting, I don't mean "I bring my crew, you bring yours and let's see who wins". Keep it classy girls, talk to the person one on one, nicely. Ask what's the issue and why the gossip. Sort it out with the person and if it can't be sorted, then agree to disagree. Stay out of each others' turf and don't kacau each other, not in a 'leave me alone B*T#@' kinda way la...
3) Love Thy Enemies
- Have you heard of the term, "keep your friends close, but keep your enemies even closer"? Well, let me tell you something, being nice to your 'enemy' kills them. Try smiling to someone who has been trying to taint your name and see what happens. You may not see instant results, or you may give the person an extra point to talk about you, but it works.
I used to get bullied (believe it or not) all my high school life. I lost ALL my 'friends' overnight because of this bunch of girl bullies who spread false rumours about me, just because they can. I suffered alright, they would pull my hair and steal my hair-ties, insult me with really really really bad foul words, call me names, push me and make me fall and all that jazz, what I did? I didn't fight back. I could have, but, instead, I smiled everytime they looked at me. They hurled more insults at me. Of course I cried when I got home la, I'm not that heroic, but one day, one of the girls in the 'bullies gang' was leaving the country and I suggested to make a farewell card for her and get all our classmates to write her a farewell note. I made the card and wrote her a little farewell note and guess what? She was shocked and began to cry and apologized for all she had done. It not only feels good when that happens, but you know what, you won without fighting.
I'm not saying this in a self-glorifying manner, just sharing with you first hand experience.
4) Proof
- If what they say about you is not true, don't worry, THE TRUTH WILL PREVAIL. :)
A continuation from the above story, after I lost all my friends, I just went on with life, just being me and after a while, one by one, those who had turned their backs on me started to realise that what they've heard about me is not true and one by one, they started talking to me again. I slowly but steadily gained back all my friends, and more. It killed the 'bullies gang' to see that, but hey, the truth WILL prevail.
5) Don't let it bother you
- If people are talking about how ugly your fashion sense is but you love it, go rock it gal!
If that's you, that IS you. Don't you ever change for haters. Don't be someone you are not, just cos you feel pressured to. Unless it is a change for the better, by all means, but please, don't change to fit in.
